Frequently Asked Questions

When Will My Order Ship?


Our goal is to get your order to you as fast as possible and in the best condition possible. We ship out packages generally within 1-2 days, sometimes same day, from Monday-Friday (sometimes Saturday). If there is extreme weather (temperatures way below freezing or a heat wave), we might decid to delay mailing your order to ensure the best chance of survival for your plants/animals.That being said, things still happen, sometimes there are delays that are out of our control, but regardless, our priority is to get your order to you as soon as possible. If there is severe weather, we will sometimes hold packages to ensure the safe arrival of live animals/plants. Most packages are sent first class USPS mail by default, if you would like to expedite shipping time we highly recommend purchasing priority mail, especially if you are ordering live animals/plants. Note that some plants we carry may be considered noxious weeds in your state. It is the CUSTOMER's responsibility to check with their own state rules and regulations before ordering (you can check the list here). Please do not order any plants that are considered noxious weeds in your state.




What is Your Dead On Arrival Policy?


In the rare event of a DOA (Dead On Arrival) case, please contact us immediately with photos of the plants or animals in the unopened original package and we will happily help. All evidence for DOA purchases must be sent to us within 2 hours of the first delivery attempt as we will not be able to guarantee anything after that. We also will not be able to guarantee anything if you have not paid for priority mail and a cold/hot pack if your local temperatures are below 32f and above 82f. Extreme temperatures WILL cause plants to either freeze (<32f) or melt (>82f). Please keep track of your shipment to avoid having the plants/animals wait in a cold/hot mailbox for an excessive amount of time. We suggest calling USPS and requesting a "hold for pickup" if you are unable to be there to take the package in within 2 hours of its delivery time, or if your local temperatures are on the extreme end. In order for us to help resolve the issue, you must follow these guidelines otherwise you will forfeit your eligibility for a refund/re-shipment of new item. Are Your Fertilizers Invertebrate (Snail and Shrimp) & Fish Safe?


Yes, unless stated otherwise We personally test all our our fertilizers that we sell to ensure they are safe for all fish and invertebrates. Although some of our fertilizers may contain "Copper", which is generally regarded as not invertebrate safe, each dose only contains a very small amount needed by plants, and will not harm any invertebrates and will quickly be absorbed by plants. If you are still not convinced, we will only be able to exclude the Copper Sulfate from our own brand Fertilizers, such as the Micro Nutrient Dry Mix Fertilizer, if requested.




Are Your Plants Snail/Pest Free?


We do our best to remove any visible snails or any other unwanted pests while packing plants, but we do not guarantee our plants to be snail-free. Most of the plants that we purchase from local nurseries are kept with Pea Puffers and Assassin Snails to help keep them snail-free but again, we cannot guarantee anything to be snail-free unless it is tissue-cultured. Snails generally considered beneficial to an aquarium and will usually not eat live plants unless they are dying or are dead. Unfortunately snails are inevitable when dealing with live aquatic plants. If you are concerned about snails getting into your tank, before adding the plants in, take 5ml of bleach (around the size of a cap off a 2liter bottle) and ONE GALLON OF WATER. Dip the plants in that solution for 10 seconds. After that, rinse the plants in separate tank water and add them to your tank. This should kill anything unwanted that might be on them. We also recommend you quarantine any live animals/plants before adding them to your aquarium.




How Does The "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" Promotion Work?


If a listing has a "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" banner on it, you will automatically get a third plant/portion for free if you buy 2 of the same plant or 2 different plants of equal value that are eligible (e.g. either 2 Frogbit or 1 Frogbit and 1 Duckweed)! If you would like to have a different plant that is also marked as "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" of equal or lesser value as the "free" item(e.g. 1 Frogbit, 1 Duckweed and 1 Salvinia Minima), please let us know in the comments section of the checkout and we will do our best to accomodate your request!




Do You Have a Physical Store?


No, we only sell online at the moment. We do offer curbside pickup at our address in Chicago for local buyers who would like to pick up their order instead of having it shipped. Please email WindyCityAquariums.com if you would like to pick up your order locally.




Do You Ship Internationally?


No, unfortunately we can only ship within the United States (All 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii) at the moment. We will most likely be able to ship to U.S. Territories and Minor Islands, so if you are living in a U.S. Territory or Minor Island feel free to contact us and we will see what options there are for shipping!
